The Porsche 962 is a sports racing car built by Porsche as a replacement for the 956 model in order to comply with the updated safety regulations of the IMSA’s GTP class. The 962 was introduced at the end of 1984, from which it quickly became successful through private owners while having a remarkably long-lived career, with some examples still proving competitive into the mid-1990s. The vehicle’s main difference from its predecessor 956 was the chassis, which allowed for the pedal box to be located behind the front axle for better safety. The 962 also featured a different air intake, as well as other aerodynamic features. The car was powered by a Type-935 2.8L flat-6 engine, with air-cooled cylinders and water-cooled heads, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox. The 962 has been proven to be highly adaptable, with many private teams continuing to modify and update the car to keep pace with the competition. Despite its age, the 962 continued to perform well in races throughout the 1990s.
