Nissan R91CP (1991)

Nissan started making Group C cars in 1985. The Nissan R91CP was a development of the Lola designed Nissan R90 series. At first a Nissan engine would be mounted in a foreign-made chassis (March Engineering or Lola Cars International). The R91CP, however, was entirely Nissan-made and developed in Japan by NISMO and Yoshi Suzuka.

The Nissan VRH35Z 3.5 litre twin-turbo V8 that had debuted in the R89C was proven successful and kept as part of the R91CP's design. The R91CP, would have slight modifications over the previous car. Most notably, the boxy turbo inlets which had been placed on the rear fenders of the R90CP were made into smaller slits, while a large snorkel was added to the top of the engine cover to cool the rear brakes, in place of the previous twin brake ducts.

In the 1991 season, K. Hoshino and Toshio Suzuki (Calsonic) easily won the Driver’s Championship with 5 wins in 7 races. In 1992, the same team notched up 5 wins in 6 races (the other going to YHP) in a splendid defense of their throne. This is what led to Nissan taking the double title – Constructor’s and Driver’s Championships – for three years in a row, a glorious achievement.

The R91CP, driven by Masahiro Hasemi, K. Hoshino, and Toshio Suzuki captured the title in the 1992 Daytona 24 Hours, the first time that a Japanese team or Japanese car had done so.
